Walter ROGERS (ROGALSKI, RAJESKI) was born Oct 13, 1903 in St Andrews Parish (Mapleton), just south of Selkirk, Manitoba, son of Nettie BURZUIK and Joseph ROGALSKI (1871-1935) from Poland about two months before he was born. ** MORE ABOUT JOSEPH ROGALSKI

 

Walter’s wife-to-be, Kristjana (Christie) SIMONDSON aka SIMUNDSON, was born Jul 13, 1905 in Selkirk, daughter of Sigridur JONSDOTTIR and Kristjan SIMUNDSON(1875-1933) from Iceland.

Christie SIMUNDSON marries Magnus MAGNUSSON
1922

 

On Dec 26, 1922 Kristjana (Christie, Christina) SIMONDSON married Magnus Johnston MAGNUSSON in Winnipeg. On Nov 10, 1923 daughter ELEANOR was born. ** At this time we know very little about Magnus MAGNUSSON (probably an Icelander).

On May 22, 1926 Walter ROGERS married Christina (nee SIMUNDSON) MAGNUSSON in Winnipeg.

 

World War II
1939-1945

 

On Sept 4, 1939 Canada and Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War II.

 

Canadian Voters List for 1940: Mr. and Mrs. Walter ROJESKI at 309 Taylor Avenue in Selkirk, MB. At 316 Taylor Ave. we find Widowed Mrs. Kritsjan SIMONDSON (Christina’s mother).

 

In 1944 that step-daughter Eleanor married Stanley COLLISON, the son of Florence HOUGHTON and John Henry COLLISON (b-1894). ** This is Christie SIMUNDSON’s child with Magnus MAGNUSSON. I (Gary STILL) went to Mapleton School with her two young sons (Kenneth and Keith COLLISON).

 

Stanley COLLISON served with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II.

 

On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered and the War in Europe ended; the next day, May 8, was declared VE Day.

For many years Walter ROGERS worked at the Manitoba Rolling Mills (M.R.M. on map above). He also owned heavy work horses (like the ones pictured below) that he provided at the Mill, along with the Teamsters who drove them.

I (Gary Still) remember all three gigantic work horse breeds as a youngster, trotting past our driveway toward the Mill.
My older brothers were ‘horse drivers’ (teamsters) for Walter ROGERS and /or Tom JOHNSON at that time

 

In 1944 that step-daughter Eleanor married Stanley COLLISON, the son of Florence HOUGHTON and John Henry COLLISON (b-1894). ** This is Christie SIMUNDSON’s child with Magnus MAGNUSSON. I (Gary STILL) went to Mapleton School with her two young sons (Kenneth and Keith COLLISON).

 

Winnipeg Free Press, Sat, Jun 12, 1948: A Bon Voyage Party for Mrs. Simundson: Mrs. Walter ROGERS entertained at tea Tuesday at her home, Mapleton, Man., in honour of her mother, Mrs. S SIMUNDSON of Selkirk, who will leave late in June by airplane, for Reykjavik, Iceland, where she will visit at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. JANSDOTTIR. Mrs. S OLAFSSON made a presentation.  Guests numbered 45. Mrs. SIMUNDSON was born in Iceland and returned once before, 38 years ago, to visit her home. On this trip, she will be accompanied by Mrs. O OLAFSON, who will visit relatives there.

In 1958 Widowed Mrs. SIMONDSON died.

On Sep 20, 1974 first wife Kristina (Christie) died.

 

Marriage to Widow Ivy (nee ZELISKO) KAZUK
After 1975

 

Sometime after 1975 Walter re-married to Ivy (nee ZELISKO) KAZUK, daughter of Mary PIWARCHUK and Julian ZALISKO (1875-1956) from the Ukraine. Ivy was the widow of John KAZUK who lived west of Lower Fort Garry, and died in 1975.
** In 1975 Walter ROGERS would have been about 72 years old; Ivy about 57 years old with grown children (Myrna, Beverley, John and Jim KAZUK). I (Gary STILL) went to Mapleton School with Myrna KAZUK (who married Dan UNIK) and Beverley KAZUK (married Jack GROBB).

 

On Oct 21, 1991 Walter ROGERS died in the Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 88. He was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery at Mapleton. On Nov 14 that same year, Ivy (nee ZELISKO)-KAZUK-ROGERS died as well. She was buried in the St Clements Church Cemetery at Mapleton.
