John SINCLAIR, a Cree Indian, was born around 1866, possibly a son of George SINCLAIR of unknown origins.

 

Around 1890 John’s wife was a Cree woman named Nancy.

In the Census of 1906 John SINCLAIR (age 45) and his wife Nancy (age 35) were enumerated in the Fisher River Indian Reserve with children as follows: John (age 17), Mary (15), McIvor (14), Sarah (12), Annie (10), Elijah (8), Caroline (3) and Arthur (age 1).

 

Surrender of the St Peters Reserve
1907-1911

 

1907 was the year of that the St Peters Indian Reserve was surrendered to the Crown and most of the native residents moved to present day Peguis Reserve (Fisher River/ Hodgson) by 1909. By 1911 the St Peters Indian Reserve ceased to exist as such, but disputes about land claims on the Reserve would continue well into the next century. The Reserve thereafter continued to be known as St Peters Parish only.

World War I
1914

 

On Aug 4, 1914 Great Britain (Canada on Aug 5) declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary to uphold treaties with France and Belgium which were under German attack. This marked the beginning of World War I.

 

In 1914 son McIvor married Edith HARPER, daughter of NANCY COCHRANE and William Thomas HARPER (b-1867) from St Peters. ** MORE ABOUT WILLIAM THOMAS HARPER

 

In 1915 son McIvor enlisted in the Army at Camp Hughes Military Base stating his next of kin as his wife Edith then living in West Selkirk. McIvor would never return home.

 

Also in 1915 when son John George enlisted stating his next of kin as his father, John SINCLAIR of Fisher River.

 

On Nov 8, 1916 son McIvor died a soldier in France. He was buried in Louez Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais.

 

Census 1916 of the Fisher River Reserve: Cree family of John SINCLAIR, age 46; wife Nancy, age 44. Children: John George (age 26), Elijah (15), Caroline (11), Annie (8) Charlie (7) and Edith (age 4). Lodger: Widow Mrs. George SINCLAIR, age 80 (born c1836). This may in fact be John’s mother, suggesting his father may have been George SINCLAIR.

 

November 11, 1919, Armistice Day (Remembrance Day) marked the end of the First World War.
