John GALLOWAY was born March 29, 1820 in Ingleby Manor, Yorkshire, England, son of Ann SHERWOOD and Thomas GALLOWAY (1792-1872).

1835

 

It was probably around 1835 that the GALLOWAY family immigrated to Canada. John’s youngest brother, Jonathan, was born on Jan 17, 1836 in Cummingsville, Ontario.

 

Marriage to Mary LONG
1844

 

In 1844 John was married to Mary LONG in East Flamborough, Ontario (north of Hamilton). She was born Jun 16, 1823 in England. Son Thomas was born in 1844.

 

Census of 1861 in East Flamborough: John GALLOWAY, farmer, age 41; wife Mary, age 37. Children: Thomas (age 17), Elizabeth Ann (15), Jabez (11), Mary Ann (6), Charlotte Ann (4), and Joshua (age 2).

 

On Sep 17, 1865 John GALLOWAY died in Carlisle, Ontario (north of Hamilton).

1867

 

On Jan 3, 1867 eldest daughter Elizabeth Ann married James BLAIR (1841-1913) from Scotland. On that same date, eldest son Thomas married Mary RYERSON in Wentworth County (ON), daughter of Anne OWEN and Reverend Seth RYERSON (1812-1863). On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) became Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC, sending out surveyors to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

 

Census of 1871 in East Flamborough: Widow Mary GALLOWAY, age 47. Children at home: Mary Ann (age 15) and Joshua (age 11).

 

In 1874 son Jabez married Artemisa McCUBBIN in Burford (ON), daughter of Maria LEE and James McCUBBIN. (1804-1873) from Scotland.  Also in 1874, daughter Mary Ann married Cyrus Smith GRIFFIN in East Flambourough, son of Eliza Jane EATON and Smith Culp GRIFFIN (1814-1894).

 

On Jan 16, 1875 Mary (nee LONG) GALLOWAY died in Wentworth, Ontario.

 

In 1884 daughter Mary Ann became the second wife of William GIBBS (1845-1903) in Selkirk (MB), a baker from England. William had been previously married to Mary Jones GABRIEL who died in 1883. ** It is uncertain what became of Mary Ann’s first husband, Smith GRIFFIN. ** MORE ABOUT WILLIAM GIBBS

 

In 1893 daughter Charlotte married Edward Ryerson HOWELL in Burlingon, ON, son of Rebecca Belle McCAY and George Miller HOWELL (1815-1899).
