(Last Updated: July 04, 2014)

Canadian Confederation and a Red River Rebellion
Manitoba becomes a Province
1867-1870

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. The Red River Métis Rebellion occurred during 1869-70. It ended when Louis RIEL accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and on July 15,1870 Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada, the Canadian Government having acquired the territory previously governed by the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC).

In the Canadian Census of 1881 George DICKINSON was recorded with his parents in New Brunswick (age 20, a Labourer).

On June 15, 1882the Town of Selkirk was incorporated. On June 28, 1886, the first transcontinental passenger train of the new CPR left Montreal for the Pacific.

George moves to Selkirk, Manitoba

By 1891 George (age 30; a Teamster) and his sister Susan (age 24) had moved to Selkirk and George became the owner of a Livery Stable. They lived on Eveline Street.

During the summer of 1891-92 Kristján(Kris) WALTERSON advertised passenger service in an enclosed, heated "wagon" to run between Selkirk, Gimli, Arnes, and Icelandic River, transporting passengers both ways.  In the following winter of 1892-93 Kris began working for George DICKINSON of Selkirk who held the contract for mail delivery.

George marries Jessie GALLOWAY
1892

On July 27, 1892, George married Jessie May GALLOWAY, daughter of Mary RYERSON & Thomas GALLOWAY (1845-1913).  Their first child (Alonzo) was born in the fall of 1893 but died in the early spring of 1894, just seven months old. Jessie was a granddaughter of Mary LONG and John GALLOWAY (1820-1865) from England.

In 1894 Kris WALTERSON decided to branch out on his own, in competition with his former employer. A new, specially-built covered sleigh therefore appeared on the "Colonization Road" that winter, while DICKINSON's sleigh, which still carried the mail, was taken over by Helgi STURLAUGSSON, Kris’ cousin. Kris' independent venture was apparently short-lived however, as by the fall of 1896 he was a driver for BRADEN's Livery & Stage Line of Selkirk, which was awarded the new mail contract that summer.

Dorothea Bolin:  Speaking about the early 1900's. Travel in those days was with horses and sleighs in winter and buggies or wagons in summer.  The roads were terribly rough. The nearest town (from Poplar Park) was Selkirk  They would go by Devil's Creek to St Peters on the Red River and cross on the ferry and then on to Selkirk.  Our father, Johan BOLIN b-1869, would come home on weekends (from Wpg or Lockport to Poplar Park).  He would take a street car to Selkirk and then rent a horse and cutter at DICKINSON's Livery Stable, Selkirk.  The roads were terrible in summer, with so much corduroy and it was so rough.

George's Illicit Affair with Sarah LAMBERT
1909

In October of 1909, George DICKINSON (age 49) had an illicit affair with Sarah LAMBERT from East Selkirk, daughter of Harriet SANDERSON & Andrew LAMBERT (1849-1915). George was a married with five young children at that time (Vivian, Beulah, George, Dorothy and Marvel). Sarah  LAMBERT was a single unwed mother of a toddler daughter (Kathleen). ** MORE ABOUT SARAH and the ANDREW LAMBERT FAMILY

On June 21, 1910, Sarah gave birth to George’s child, Tena Irene, in Selkirk. Baby Irene was soon whisked away and adopted by the family of Agnes & John Robert MOORE.

On Feb 28, 1911, Jessie gave birth to another daughter (Winifred). Winnie would be George’s last child.

It seems likely that George’s wife Jessie was completely unaware that her husband had transgressed; they apparently lived the rest of their lives in blissful matrimony. Also unaware, it would seem, was John McDONALD who was actually an employee at George’s Livery Stable. McDONALD would later marry Sarah LAMBERT, legitimizing their daughter Kathleen.

On Oct 1, 1913 Sarah LAMBERT married John McDONALD at the Old St Andrews Church on the Red, thus legitimizing their five-year old daughter Kathleen.
