In 1874 the family moved to St James (Winnipeg, Manitoba) where Rod's father (Ben) completed his theological studies at St Johns College and was ordained as an Anglican Minister, launching a life-long career of missionary work among the Indians. From 1876 to 1880 the family was at Cumberland House, Saskatchewan (west of The Pas, MB).

Rod was nine years old in 1880 when the family moved again to the St Peters Indian Reserve, along the Red River north of Selkirk, MB. By 1890 the family was living in east Mapleton, across the river from the St Clements Church and Lower Fort Garry.

These children grew up in the Gonor area (East Lockport, across from Lower Fort Garry) and attended the Gonor School. Most of their future husbands were childhood school-mates from the Lockport-Gonor area.

Rod eventually settled in West Mapleton (River Lot 7) near Mary Anne’s parents, and on Apr 20, 1915 Mary Anne died there. She was buried in the St Clements Churchyard, Mapleton. She was only 39 years old.
