Edward George GOWEN was born around 1911 in Hertford, England, son of Ethel GORDON & Charles GOWEN (1868-1932) ** MORE ABOUT CHARLES GOWEN

George was about 11 years old when he and his 14 year old brother, Ernest GOWEN (1908-1977), sailed from London to Canada to join their father (Charles) in Selkirk, Manitoba. Their father was then working at the Manitoba Rolling Mills (MRM).

Marriage to Bernice McKENZIE
1936

On Jan 16, 1936 George married Bernice McKENZIE, daughter of Mary Anne BIRSTON and Roderick Alexander McKENZIE (1871-1953). ** MORE ABOUT ROD ALEX McKENZIE

After they married, George & Bernice made their first home in Mapleton, later moving to Selkirk.

From his obituary: George worked at the Rolling Mills and with Manitoba Telephone System until his retirement in 1975. He served as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He was a faithful member of St. Clements Anglican Church at Mapleton. His service varied from serving on the Vestry, singing in the choir, working on clean up bees, painting the inside of the church, decorating at special times of the year, helping to build an extension to the church hall, cooking pancakes on Shrove Tuesdays and setting up a PA system and using his knowledge to set up for outdoor services.

Harriet died in August of 1981.

George re-married 1986 to Mary HUCULAK who died 1996.

From his Obit: George GOWEN died on Oct 15, 2000; survived by his son Edward (Jeanette) GOWEN; his daughters, Carol LAYE (Orest MELESCHUK), Gail (Bob) PARE, Dianne STILL and Meredith (Vern) PARK; brother Fred GOWEN of Alberta. His extended family: Lorne (Shirley) HUCULAK, Ken (Donna) HUCULAK, and Lynette HUCULAK (John MacIVER). He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years Bernice (January 1936 to August 1981), and by his second wife of 10 years, Mary (August 1986 to February 1996) his father in 1932 and his mother in 1948; his brother Ernie GOWEN; sisters, May GALLE and Edith KIMZEY.
