On Jan 31,1835 Richard PRITCHARD was born in Red River (Kildonan), son of Catherine McGILLIVRAY and John PRITCHARD (1777-1855) who came to Canada in 1800 and later settled in Red River around 1815.

1861

 

In 1861 Richard married Catherine MATHESON in Kildonan, daughter of Margaret ROSS (Half-breed) and Hugh MATHESON (1805-1879) from Scotland, also a Red River Settler who arrived there in 1815.

1867-1870

 

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

 

On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.

 

On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.

 

Census of 1870 in Kildonan (Lot 54): Richard PRITCHARD, age 33; wife Catherine, age 31. Children: Margaret (age 8), Letitia (4) and Henrietta (age 2).

 

In 1875 Richard claimed his Scrip in Kildonan as the son of a Red River Settler. Wife Catherine also claimed her Half-breed Scrip there that year for herself and for their children; Margaret, Jemima, and Henrietta.

1881

 

Census of 1881 in the Prince Albert District (Red Deer Hill-Halcro): Richard PRITCHARD,, age 45; wife Catherine, age 40. Children: Jemima (age 14), Henrietta (12), Samuel (10), Richard (5) and Alex R (age 3). Also his nephew, Archibald PRITCHARD, age 24.

1885

Census of 1891 in the Red Deer Hill (Halcro) District: Richard PRITCHARD, age 54; wife Catherine, age 50. Children: Jemima (age 22), Samuel (19), James (16), Richard (14), Ross (12), Nina (9), Ethel (7) and Middleton (age 5).

 

Census of 1901 in Halcro District (46-26-W2): Richard PRITCHARD, age 65; wife Catherine, age 61. Children: Samuel (age 30), Richard D (23), Alexander R (21), Nina B (19), Ethel B (17) and Middlerton (age 15).

 

In 1903 daughter Nina married William PAYNTER (1875-1953) in Halcro, son of Elizabeth and George PAYNTER (1847-1921).

 

Census of 1906 in Halcro District (46-26-W2):Richard PRITCHARD, age 70; wife Catherine, age 65. Children: Samuel (age 30), Ethel (22) and Middleton (age 20).

 

In 1911 son James married Matilda Jane FIDLER in Winnipeg, daughter of Sarah Ann McLEOD and Henry FIDLER (1861-1922). ** MORE ABOUT HENRY FIDLER

 

Census of 1911 in Halcro District (46-26-W2): Richard PRITCHARD, age 75; wife Catherine, age 71. Son Middleton, age 25.

 

On July 5, 1914 Richard PRITCHARD died in Halcro.

 

Census of 1916: Widow Catherine PRITCHARD (age 78) with her sons Richard and Middleton in the Carrot River District.

 

Around 1921 Catherine (nee MATHESON) PRITCHARD died in Kinistino. Kinistino is shown on the map above.
