Canadian Confederation
Red River Métis Rebellion
Manitoba becomes a Province
1867-1870

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister.William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC. Surveyors were sent out to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished. This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.

On July 15, 1870 Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada. The Rebellion was essentially over and Louis RIEL fled to Montana in fear of his life.

In 1870 John McLEOD was the occupant of River Lot 137 in St Andrews Parish; across from Lower Fort Garry, near his brother Malcolm.

On Jul 12, 1875 Clementina (nee HARPER) McLEOD claimed her Half-breed Scrip as the wife of John McLEOD of St Clements Parish.

In 1880 daughter Mary married Jeremiah JOHNSTON in St Peters, son of Elizabeth (Indian) and Jeremiah JOHNSTON (b-1816).

In the 1881 Census John (age 47) and Clementine (age 41) were enumerated in St Andrews Parish with children as: Murdock (age 22), John (20), Eliza (17), Christine (12), Norman (10) and Alex (age 9).

In September of 1881 Clementina HARPER died at Clandeboye, MB

Marriage to Margaret (nee COCHRANE) JOHNSTON
1881

On Nov 14, 1881 John re-married to Margaret (nee COCHRANE), widow of James JOHNSTON who had died around 1880. A week later, on Nov 21, son Murdoch married Emma Jane IRVINE, daughter of Jane COCKRAN and George IRVINE (1805-1870), an HBC employee from the Orkneys of Scotland.

On Mar 5, 1883 Wife Margaret gave birth to twins, Anna Bella and Janet Elizabeth.

By about 1888 son John Jr. was married to Flora Bella Ann McDONALD, daughter of Margaret FRASER and Joseph McDONALD (1837-1912).

Census 1891, St Andrews Parish: John McLEOD and his wife Margaret (both age 57) with children as Christiana (age 22), Norman (20), Alex (18) and twins Janet & Annabella (both age 8). JOHNSTON step-children (Children of Margaret COCHRANE & James JOHNSON b-1828): Murdoch JOHNSTON (age 35), Samuel (31), Eliza (30), Colin (23) and Matilda JOHNSTON (age 22).

** MORE ABOUT WILLIAM FIDLER

Around 1900 daughter Matilda married Elworth WEBSTER (born 1871 in Ontario).

Enumerated in the 1901 Census in the Petersfield area were John McLEOD, wife Margaret (both age 68) and their twin daughters Bella and Janet (both age 18).

In 1905 daughter Anna Bella married Frederick Elmer WEBSTER from Ontario. By 1906 they had one child and were living in Winnipeg. ** It seems quite plausible that Frederick may have been a brother of Elworth who married Bella’s sister Matilda.

In 1907 daughter Janet married George Davis TANTON in St Andrews. George was born in P.E.I., son of Sarah Davis DARBY and Thomas Davis TANTON (1839-1889). They moved to Alberta (Wetaskiwin).

On Apr 11, 1912 John McLEOD died, and on May 8, 1918 Margaret McLEOD died. They were both 84 years old. They were buried in the St Clements Anglican Church Cemetery at Mapleton.
